Dla ludu Makonde zamieszkującego Mozambik taniec w maskach Mapiko od zawsze był ważnym elemenem jednoczącym ludzi, przedstawiającym historię tego kraju, narzędziem walki z kolonializmem oraz tradycją przekazywaną z pokolenia na pokolenie. Najlepszy tancerz Mapiko – Atanásio Cosme Nyusi zabiera nas w podróż po przeszłym i teraźniejszym Mozambiku, opowiada historię tej niezwykle efektownej tradycji tańca w tajemniczych maskach i strojach, w której świat realny przenika się ze światem wierzeń, a także stara się przekazać swoją wiedzę o tej wyjątkowej formie sztuki, łączącej muzykę i poezję, swemu synowi.

Jej film Mama Goema: the Cape Town Beat In Five Movements zdobył nagrodę za najlepszy dokument na FF TriContinental w 2011 r., był wyświetlany na międzynarodowych festiwalach i pokazywany przez kanał SABC. Obecnie reżyserka pracuje nad krótkim metrażem Nawar: She Who Guards Herself.

SYNOPSIS:
For the Makonde people of Mozambique, Mapiko – the dance of masks – has always been an important element uniting them, presenting the history of their country, a tool in their fight against colonialism, and a tradition passed down through generations. The best Mapiko dancer, Atanásio Cosme Nyusi, takes us on a journey across the past and present Mozambique, narrating the story of this incredibly striking dance form, with its mysterious masks and costumes, where the real world is intertwined with the world of beliefs. He is also trying to share his knowledge about this unique art form, linking music and poetry, with his son.

Sara CF de Gouveia – director and producer of short documentaries, music videos and international campaigns. Her film Mama Goema: the Cape Town Beat in Five Movements won the best documentary award at the TriContinental FF in 2011, was screened at international festivals and shown by the SABC Channel. Currently, she’s working on a short film Nawar: She Who Guards Herself.
