WATCH AND TALK POLISH CINEMA: \Mother Joan of Angels

An amazing performance by Lucyna Winnicka, which earned her an award from the French Film Academy. One of Poland’s most visually stunning movies. The film is a creative interpretation of the famous story of the Loudun nun possessions, based on the novel by Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz. The dramatic love of a prioress who breaks free of the convent’s isolation and a priest, who through passion becomes aware of enslavement in dogmatic rules.

A convent in the far reaches of XVIIIth century Poland.  Father Suryn arrives to exorcize prioress Joanna, who is possessed by demons, but his mission fails when they discover feelings for each other.

A psychological study of the mind which tests the resilience of willingly accepted limits to human nature and of imposed restrictions.
