Oświetlony jasno gwiazdą Juliette Binoche, a także reżysera Christophe Honoré (m.in. „Mężczyzna w kąpieli”, „Piękna”), „Winter Boy” przedstawia historię, w której centrum znajduje się siedemnastoletni Lucas, rozdarty między bratem, który właśnie się wyprowadził a matką, z którą chłopak został sam. Lucas przeżywa niedawną śmierć ojca, a jednocześnie podczas wyjazdu do Paryża układa kolejne kawałki siebie. Moje życie to dzikie zwierzę, mówi. Siedemnaście lat to najczęściej wiek, kiedy wszystko przeżywa się intensywnie – przyjaźnie, miłosne fascynacje, a także doświadczenie żałoby.

Christophe Honoré nakręcił film w dużej mierze osobisty. Wcielając się też w swojego zmarłego ojca, skupia się na relacjach bohatera z rodziną, eksplorując jednocześnie dziwny czas, kiedy człowiek mimo smutku chce czerpać z życia garściami. Jak mówi sam reżyser, to film o tym, jak przemienić bezdyskusyjną tragedię w taką formę cierpienia, przy której jednak będzie nas stać na uśmiech.

Guided by the bright star of Juliette Binoche, as well as the director’s, Christophe Honore’s („Man at Bath”, „The Beautiful Person” – among others), „Winter boy” describes a story of Lucas, who’s 17, torn apart between brother who just left the family house to live in the capital city and mother, with whom he was left alone. The young man is having a rough time after his father’s death, while fitting sequent pieces of himself during the trip to Paris. My life is a wild animal, he says. Seventeen years is a wild age, when everything you’re living through is absolutely intensive – friendships, romantic fascinations, even the experience of grief.

Christophe Honoré made a film which is largely a personal journey. Impersonating his late father, the director focuses on relations between a character and his family, exploring the strange and unique time when one wants to life to the fullest, despite the sadness. As the director says, this film is about how to turn indisputable tragedy in other form of suffering, that allows us at least to weakly smile.
